I think that there is a lot to say about dances and our experiences as DJs, but I think I must first bring up a discussion of the filtering process of our music. Of course we all know that greater scrutiny was upon us as we were in our young to mid teens when we began cutting into Pat's business.
The first experience I remember was getting music together for the youth conference down at Fort Knox (which I will discuss further in the next post). Nate D. came over to my house and we put our music together before taking it to the Laney's for adult review. I remember that the Eurythmics "Here Comes the Rain Again" was cut by a leader whose name I don't remember. He disapproved of it saying, "I want to dive into your ocean."
The second experience is when we were playing Utah Saints at a dance at the Fairfield Ward building. During the chorus of "U-U-U-Utah Saints," the Laneys rushed the staged demanding that we immediately cease playing this song about "Utah Sex." Sometimes leaders put more into your minds than they shield you from.

Or the RHCP song " Give it Away" which I still insist is about money.
Dave... Oh, Dave... corrupting the minds of youth, even in your early years. They're going to make you drink hemlock and die a martyr's death... LONG LIVE THE NUJ!
how about when they banned "my sharona" b/c of the lyric about a thigh? no one even knew the lyrics beside 'bum bum bum bum my sharona"! how about some posts about youth trips, good heavens there has to be tons about that.
That was really funny! I think the minds of the adults were dirtier than the minds of the youth.
